The 80Bites Diet

New Year, New You.. Right?! As we enter 2012 I’m sure more than a few of us have made that classic New Years Resolution- Lose 10lbs, go to the gym 4 times a week, get rid of the tummy and love handles, etc. And let’s be honest, by Valentines Day, most of us will be back to downing cheese fries on the couch. But what if you could still lose weight, still get healthy, and still eat the cheese fries? I’d say I’m in.

The app makes it easy!

The 80Bites Diet is, as its name suggests, a diet based on altering the quantity of your daily food consumption rather than cutting out foods. It’s concept lies within making small, subtle changes that will have a long-term effect on your health and weight. It’s not a crash-diet and you will NOT be starving yourself, but instead, training your body (very slowly) to accept a smaller amount of food to obtain the feeling of being full. Studies have shown that an average adult can take 80 bites of food a day and still get that “full” feeling. Most of us, however, are eating quite a bit more. By over-eating, our stomachs begin to stretch, causing us to eat more to retain the full feeling. It’s a vicious cycle and can only be broken through the training that the 80bites diet so aptly provides.

As Americans, we tend to over-eat, eat quickly, and stray away from the concept of eating on a schedule. The 80bites diet is a 12-week program that seeks to alter these exact behaviors that we have become accustomed to. By making these changes in the four areas of Quantity, Frequency, Quality and Balance over the 12-weeks, you will be able to shrink your over-stretched stomach and consume less food per day while still feeling full.

The best part? You can still eat ice cream! It seems crazy, but by controlling the amount of food intake, you can actually still eat all the foods you love. It goes without saying that eating unhealthy foods is still, well… unhealthy, but at least with this diet you don’t have to feel like you’re cheating yourself out of your goal by having that cookie after dinner.

So, here I am. I’m 5’8” and approximately 120 lbs. As a true Italian, I absolutely LOVE pasta and pretty much all carbs in general; and cheese just happens to be my all-time favorite food. I also have a crazy sweet tooth AND have been a vegetarian for almost two years now. Basically, any diet with food requirements and/or restrictions is not in the cards for me… yet I was told that I’m a great candidate for the 80bites diet! I’m one of those people that wouldn’t mind loosing a few pounds, but don’t necessarily need to. Yes, “diet” typically refers to weight loss, but for me, it’s more about creating more healthy eating habits. There are people like me, and there are people that fall into the overweight or obese categories that will all try this diet and believe it or not, will all see results. I’m not trying to lose 30 lbs, but if I were, I would certainly still consider 80bites. It’s universal, for anyone interested in losing weight and/or falling into better eating patterns.

As I continue progressing through each category of the diet, I will be posting my progress. As mentioned, there are four categories: Quantity, Frequency, Quality and Balance and the diet suggests you spend 3 weeks per category (ultimately reaching the 12-week mark). I’ve already started the Quantity module; so stay tuned for my first progress post!
